Earth, sky, light - In the world with roots in the Borderland."
Together with artists Helene Callesen and Nikolaj Callesen.
Three Danish visual artists who grew up in Sønderjylland exhibit works that relate to the culture and nature of the borderland that shaped them and that still play an important role in the way they orient themselves in the world.
The nature of the borderland ranges from fjords and straits in the east, across the watershed line to the elongated expanses and the sea in the west. The cultural history contains similar spans and contrasts, just as smooth, ordinary and calm as the present can unfold in Sønderjylland, just as highly dramatic and existentially explosive is the history of the borderland. Sønderjylland and the borderland; always an external part, always here an inbuilt vigilance about spiritual communities inwardly, outwardly and across borders.
All three have in common the close relationship and from childhood knowledge of the entire natural features of the borderland.
What they have in common is growing up in a culture where dialogue about belonging, about enlightenment and education, about history and about communities, spiritual and concrete, has been central. All three artists today work professionally with visual art, where nature and man's relationship to it and to each other is an indispensable part of the material, both in a concrete and in an ideological sense. Questions about being with and in one's surroundings, the natural and the social, and the experience of continuous changes, internal and external, recur in the works of all three artists. They also have in common the desire to recognize the significance of both the physical and cultural landscape of childhood, that of South Jutland, the borderland, in each of their journeys in the world, in cities, in landscapes, in communities in other parts of the world.
